Cheung's Residence: A Masterpiece of Simplicity and Openness

Yu-Ngok Lo's Award-Winning Design Shines in Residential Architecture

Renowned designer Yu-Ngok Lo has transformed a dilapidated one-story house into a stunning two-story residence, Cheung's Residence. The design, which won the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2012, is a testament to the power of simplicity, openness, and natural light.

The project's unique properties stem from its location on a 5,000 square foot site in a conservative residential neighborhood. The original house, built in the late 60s, was in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. The owner initially wanted to add a bedroom and bathroom to the existing structure, but local zoning requirements and the discovery of termite damage and hazardous materials led to a decision to tear down the existing structure and build anew.

With a limited budget and small project scope, Lo focused on simplicity and openness. The footprint of the new building was determined by the site's shape and local zoning regulations, while the building's formal expression was governed by orientation with simplicity in mind. Natural light also played a crucial role in the design. The bedrooms, located on the second floor, are separated from the semi-public programs and are situated away from the street for privacy. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views, while louver shades block the southern sun and reduce solar heat gain. South-facing skylights compensate for the natural light lost due to the louver shades.

An atrium and a balcony were created at the dining area, connecting both floors near the entrance facing north. This "light fixture" of the house illuminates the circulation area through exterior windows and skylights. The living/kitchen space is located on the south side of the building next to the dining area. Sliding doors blur the boundary between interior and exterior, offering spatial flexibility. The adjacent outdoor space can be used as an extension of the living area during functions and events. The operable sliding windows also aid in air circulation and increase ventilation during summer.

Lo's design also prioritizes environmental sustainability. The existing landscape was preserved, with the tree in front of the existing building remaining and a new planter created around it to reduce surface runoff. The backyard planting area features low maintenance ground covers and light bollards for nighttime accessibility. The building envelope is constructed primarily with high-performance glazing and a concrete wall due to its high thermal mass. The open design of the residence reduces the building's lighting energy consumption. A concrete deck with a high solar reflectance rating roof is proposed for future installation of solar panels. The new residence is anticipated to be LEED certified.

Lo's Cheung's Residence is a shining example of how simplicity, openness, and natural light can transform a space. The design's unique features and strengths have not only won it the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award but also set a new standard in residential architecture.
